With spring turkey hunting season days away, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has opened two more wildlife management areas to the public. Fish and Wildlife’s Derek Beard is an assistant director in the wildlife division.
“One is in Morgan County, it's a brand-new wildlife management area called Horse Mill Branch WMA. It consists of about 640 acres. The other area that we're opening is just an addition to an existing wildlife management area in Owen County. It’s about 225 acres.”
Beard said across the state, 136 wildlife management areas provide public access to a total of about 1.6 million acres.
“A wildlife management area is basically, public lands that we acquired, either through purchase or license agreement. Basically, for public hunting, fishing, or other wildlife-related activities, such as you know, hiking, wildlife viewing, that sort of thing.”
Spring gobbler hunting season for youths is this weekend and the general hunting season begins the following weekend.
