To stand next to, maybe even stroke the seat of, a motorcycle engineered to be an uncompromising track demolisher is equal parts terrifying and exciting. If you want to do more than stroke the seat, if you want to call one of these machines yours, I don't think much compares to KTM's 450 SMR, pound for pound.
Back in 2023, the 450 SMR received a fairly significant overhaul, including a new SX-derived frame, revised subframe, revised engine internals, and a host of rider aids and assists. Then, in 2025, KTM gave the 450 SMR a fairly substantial update in the form of a lighter frame and a WP XACT Closed Cartridge spring fork. For 2026, the 450 SMR received some minor updates, helping it meet the FIM's 109 dB noise limit.
With all that considered, you'd be forgiven for thinking 2027 would be a promising year for a fairly significant overhaul, considering the last one was four years ago; that isn't what's happening. But I think prospective buyers will be happier with the way KTM has chosen to improve its offering in the 450 SMR for 2027.
For 2027, KTM is introducing its 4-year Premium Manufacturer's Warranty for its off-road and closed-course competition models; I don't believe any rider would say that's not a welcome upgrade to any package. The Austrian brand extended its four-year manufacturer's warranty to street-legal models produced as late as 2025, which covered a lot of the unsold new stock the brand accumulated over the past year, during a time when potential customers were plagued with reliability doubts.
Unfortunately, the 4-year Premium manufacturer's Warranty is only available to customers in the EU. Hats off to KTM for meeting this head-on, and here's hoping the 4-year warranty will help to get more bums on the seat of an undeniably brilliant bike, but we'd all love this benefit to extend to customers in the US too.
Apart from the warranty, the 2027 450 SMR is largely the same turnkey racing and training package that was on offer in 2026. It has, however, gotten some cosmetic updates in the form of black handguards, wheels, exhaust, and seat, which add a touch more menace to the offering—as if it needed any. The question is, given the 4-year Premium Manufacturer's Warranty, how likely are you to drop $12,499 on a brand new 450 SMR?
