Kristen Bell slips up on name of award show she’s hosting

Kristen Bell has joked she is still struggling with the new name for the awards show she’s hosting this weekend.

The Nobody Wants This star, 45, first hosted the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards in 2018, and returned to the role last year.

She will once again host the ceremony this year, but the event has now been rebranded as the Actor Awards.

“Renaming it is a big thing to apply to the old processor,” Bell told USA Today. “There's been a lot of slip-ups. But we politely correct each other when I say the SAG Awards. Nope, it's now called the Actor Awards.”

She added that the decision to change the name was “not my department, and above my pay grade,” but that she hoped the new title would emphasize that the ceremony represents a chance for actors alone to have their say on the film and television performances of their peers.

“That's what this show is about, that’s what makes it unique,” said Bell. “Some branding genius was like, 'Why not call it the Actor Awards?' And they called me, told me it's called the Actor Awards, and I said, ‘Let's roll!’”

This year, One Battle After Another leads the nominations with seven nods, including for best ensemble. Other contenders for the guild's top honor include Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Frankenstein.

But the film nominations also had some surprising snubs. While Ariana Grande was nominated for her supporting role in Wicked: For Good, Cynthia Erivo was left out for her performance as the musical’s lead character Elphaba Thropp.

Dwayne Johnson was not recognized for starring in The Smashing Machine, and neither George Clooney nor Adam Sandler landed a nomination for their work in Jay Kelly.

Plus, no performances in foreign films were nominated at all — meaning Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value and Brazilian thriller The Secret Agent were forgotten by the guild this year, even though Wagner Moura won the best actor honors at Cannes for the latter and has been tipped for success at the Oscars.

In the TV categories, Hollywood comedy The Studio scored the most nominations with five, while Netflix’s creepy crime drama Adolescence and Mike White’s popularThe White Lotus each earned four. Catherine O’Hara is posthumously nominated for her performance in The Studio.

Harrison Ford is set to receive the SAG-AFTRA Life Achievement Award during the prestigious ceremony.

Netflix will once again stream the awards live from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT.
