Kris Srikkanth unimpressed with selectors over KL Rahul's inclusion for Asia Cup

NEW DELHI: Former chairman of the selection committee Kris Srikkanth on Tuesday expressed his disappointment over the selection of injured KL Rahul for the upcoming Asia Cup.

The BCCI selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar on Monday announced the 17-member squad for the tournament.

Rahul, who recovered from a thigh injury he sustained during IPL, recently developed a niggle unrelated to his original injury but despite that the selection committee included him in the Asia Cup squad.

The niggle makes Rahul a doubtful starter for India's opening game against Pakistan on September 2.

Questioning the selection policy, Srikkanth slammed the Agarkar-led panel and stressed that on the fact that injured Rahul shouldn't have been part of the team.

"It's being said that KL Rahul has a niggle. If you have a niggle, don't pick him in the squad. If a player is not fit during selection, you shouldn't pick him. That was our policy. On the day of selection, if a player is not fit, don't select him. If you want to pick him for the World Cup, select him for the World Cup. That's a different issue. Now they are saying that he might play after a couple of matches and that's why we have picked Sanju Samson as a travelling reserve. What's all this," Srikkanth said in a video on his YouTube channel.

In the selection press conference, Agarkar explained the decision to include Rahul, saying it was important for 31-year-old to get enough game time ahead of the ODI World Cup in India.
