Kris Boyd swats away Jota top dog talk as Rangers hero reveals his best player in the league pick

Kris Boyd disputed talk of Jota being the Scottish Premiership top dog after the Portuguese ace’s scintillating display for Celtic in their win over Ross County. Former Hoops man Scott Allan claimed the former Benfica winger is the best player in the league as they reviewed the champions 3-1 win in Dingwall on Sky Sports ahead of live coverage of the first Edinburgh derby of the season.

Ex-Hibee Allan was purring – just like Celtic gaffer Ange Postecoglou 24 hours earlier – over Jota’s performance with his three assists helping the champions pick up a big victory in the Highlands. But fellow pundit Boyd was having none of it and instead picked out returning Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos as the main man in the Premiership as he scored after coming off the bench against Kilmarnock following a lengthy injury lay-off.

Allan, who had four years in the east end of Glasgow, said of Jota: “For me he’s the best player in the league. His numbers last season were incredible. In terms of numbers, he’s the player to get the ball to because when he’s on it you know something is going to happen. And he’s got that thing the Celtic fans love - that bit of arrogance on the ball. Another three assists, his numbers are incredible. He’s a player who is only going to get better and if he keeps developing he’ll end up at one of the big teams in Europe."

But smirking Boyd countered: “Jota the best player in the league? I’m not too sure about that. Who would I go for? Let’s just say he came back and scored yesterday!” Gers strike duo Antonio Colak was on the scoresheet along with Morelos as two of Boyd’s former clubs clashed at Ibrox and he said: “I’m pleased for Antonio Colak as well. He’s had a little bit of criticism as well in terms of not getting involved in the play but all good strikers get themselves in positions to score goals and that’s exactly what he did.

“And then you look at Alfredo Morelos. I’m sure people will be shouting for offside at the back post but he wasn’t and he managed to get himself in a position between the sticks and Rangers fans will be absolutely delighted to see him back ahead of a massive game on Tuesday night.”
