Kris Boyd was in full troll mode as he showed his true World Cup colours to mock England's quarter-final exit.
The former Rangers and Kilmarnock striker has been football shirt shopping since France knocked Gareth Southgate’s men out at the weekend. Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud goals sent Les Bleus into a semi-final clash with Croatia, but they had to rely on Harry Kane blasting a second penalty over the bar late on after the Spurs star had levelled things up from the spot.
The inquest into the Three Lions’ defeat has been going since full-time. Southgate has admitted that he's unsure if he still has the energy to stay in the job after his third tournament in charge ended. Whether the FA go down the foreign route with Mauricio Pochettino or Thomas Tuchel, or go for another Englishman should Southgate step down was the topic of debate as the Sky Sports panel discussed where England go from here.
But Boyd was clearly itching to sub salt in the wounds, and was delighted when the opportunity for a wind up presented itself. Under the pretence of feeling the heat in the studio as the country lies gripped by a cold snap, Boyd peeled off his jumper to reveal a crisp, white France away shirt as former England international Danny Mills and European football journo Andy Brassell looked on.
Boyd quipped: “I’ve done really well this morning not to bring it up, but I’m too warm now so I’m going to have to remove this top.” As he unveiled what he had on underneath, the rest seemed to realise what was coming as they groaned.
A beaming Boyd continued: “How is that for ye?! Is that okay for ye?” before a salty Mills got his retaliation in, saying: “I’m just surprised that a double XL is a little bit tight,” to which Boyd replied: “It’s a medium - it was the last one left in the shop!”
And he was just disappointed that he couldn’t match up his international allegiance with his club, admitted: “I was desperate for a blue one as well. But this had to do.”
