Kolkata witnesses year’s second zero-shadow day

KOLKATA: Kolkatans were lucky to experience the second zero-shadow day of the year on Friday with the overcast skies clearing up around 11.41am. Though the sun shone down bright, objects did not cast a shadow. The previous zero-shadow day was on June 5.

On a zero-shadow day, at a particular time around noon, the sun is exactly at the zenith and does not cast a shadow of any object.

Zero-shadow day happens twice a year for locations between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

“It’s lucky that this year both the zero-shadow days could be observed in Kolkata clearly. Usually, because of monsoon, the second zero-shadow day remains cloudy. But not on Friday when the zero-shadow moment (11:41am) was clear and the sun shone bright,” said Institute of Astronomy Space and Earth Science (IASES) Kolkata director Debiprosad Duari.
