Kolkata: 'Seasonal viruses' strike with Covid-like fever, cough, runny nose

KOLKATA: Not all cough, fever and runny nose are symptoms of Covid-19. Doctors across the city have been receiving a steady stream of patients with various viral infections, along with Covid. Upper respiratory tract infections have made a comeback with the rains starting to set in and doctors blame parainfluenza, adenovirus and common flu for the illnesses around this time.

Given the overlapping symptoms, most patients have been getting checked and tested, fearing that they might have caught the novel coronavirus. For many, it has been turning out to be common flu. "Patients have started coming with illnesses caused by viruses other than the novel coronavirus. Since these are respiratory infections, people are showing overlapping symptoms of Covid. The hot and humid weather is responsible for this. Once it starts raining properly, the infections will go down," said internal medicine specialist Syamasis Bandopadhyay of Apollo Hospitals.
