KOLKATA: Bankim Mukherjee Sarani – popularly known as Sahapur Road that connects Durgapur Bridge with Taratala — will be partially shut for a month due to sewerage work. It may be shut down completely if needed, civic officials and police said.
Traffic will be diverted to allow the construction of seven manholes at different locations on Bankim Mukherjee Sarani in Ward 81 to solve the age-old waterlogging problem in the area. Construction of these manholes is necessary for desilting of a major brick sewer line that carries storm water from various parts of New Alipore.
While buses and trucks will be redirected as and when the work reaches a more advanced stage in the next few days, cops will take a call on smaller vehicles based on the ground situation. The diversions will remain till June 26.
TOI on Saturday found that excavation work had started on the road though vehicles are still moving through two adjoining lanes.
Sources said they saw these diversions as a “last option”. “If diversions take place here, both BL Saha Road and Biren Roy Road (East) will see extra pressure of traffic,” an officer said.
