Kolkata: Religious divide blurs as youths rebuild temple

KOLKATA: At a humble neighbourhood in the Olaichandi Road area near Tala Park, youths from different communities have set aside their religious beliefs to come together and restore a half-a-century-old Shiva temple. Aftab Khan, Firoz Khan and Amrit Limboo have been as busy and invested as their friends, like Vinay Pathak, to pool in money for the past six months to rebuild the temple on Indra Biswas Road, at the corner of Tala Park. The 'praan prathishtha' ceremony is set to be held for the new Shivalinga at the refurbished temple on Wednesday.

The temple, which had been lying in a state of utter disrepair, is a local landmark. The local youths have been thinking about the temple's renovation for some time but could not take the plunge, given the huge cost of construction. "Rebuilding the temple needed nearly Rs 30 lakh and such an amount cannot be arranged only through crowd funding," said Aftab. In December last year, nearly 40 youths from the locality decided to give it a shot.
