Kolkata: National Library city hub to reopen

KOLKATA: Ajay Pratap Singh, the new director-general of the National Library (NL), plans to restore and rejuvenate the National Library’s historic city hub at Esplanade which used to house newspapers and periodicals with IT support; develop repositories of all 22 scheduled languages; and focus on developing virtual environment to provide support to information seekers and bibliophiles.

The city hub of the National Library, which was closed, will shortly resume full-fledged services. It will be equipped with the best possible Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-based support to the readers, said Singh

Transforming the children’s section into a vibrant creative centre is also on the anvil.

The existing facility at the National Library is set to undergo a thorough makeover to attract children so that they can inculcate a reading habit.

The National Library will organize a lithographic exhibition for the first time in Kolkata. “Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee also collected a good number of illustrated books and this illustrated lithography collection represents the old Kolkata scenes,” he said.
