KOLKATA: Motorists and locals have raised safety concerns over cracks on a section of the VIP Road-bound arm of the Ultadanga flyover that has been plagued with problems since it was commissioned 11 years ago. A girder in the EM Bypass-bound arm had collapsed in 2013. A crack had developed on a pier of the VIP Road-bound arm due to faulty bearing.
Two cracks-one between the brick tie wall and the abutment and another one above the pier portion and girder-were noticed on Tuesday, setting off the alarm bells. Many motorists also stopped to look at the cracks and photograph them after a video on it went viral on social media.
