Kochi: Land acquisition survey for Vaduthala overbridge to start soon

KOCHI: The survey of the land acquisition for the proposed railway overbridge (ROB) at Vaduthala in the city would begin next week. The preliminary notification of the land acquisition for the project was published recently.

Officials of the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation-Kerala (RBDC-K) has informed that the survey process to evaluate the buildings and land to be acquired for the project would begin next week.

The social impact assessment (SIA) report on the land acquisition project had suggested the authorities to ensure proper compensation and rehabilitation of affected persons and to avoid environmental issues.

It was in January that the report on SIA study, which was conducted by the Bharat Mata School of Social Work (BMSSW), Thrikkakara, was submitted to the district collector.

As per the existing proposal of the ROB, a total of 1.48 acres of land owned by 48 people would be acquired for the project. A total of Rs 51.80 crore has been sanctioned for the project. The project will directly affect 47 landowners in the region and 10 families would be evicted from their houses.

The proposed project is expected to resolve the long pending traffic congestion issue near the Vaduthala railway gate area and other parts of Chittoor road. The RBDC-K had taken up the ROB project in 2016 alongside Pachalam ROB as part of the Kochi Metro package.

Though the first alignment of the project was almost approved by the railways, the proposal to double the railway lines between Ernakulam and Shoranur forced the authorities to redesign the proposed ROB at Vaduthala.
