Chinese state media have reported a disturbing knife attack that resulted in multiple casualties at a hospital in the southwest region of the country. The incident, described as a 'vicious assault,' took place on Tuesday in Yunnan province, specifically at Zhenxiong County People's Hospital in Zhaotong city.
The official Xinhua News Agency confirmed that there were more than 10 casualties, while an online post from Guizhou province television, quoting unnamed authorities, stated that two individuals had tragically lost their lives and 23 others sustained injuries in the attack.
According to reports, a suspect has been apprehended in connection with the incident. A witness who narrowly escaped the attack recounted the harrowing experience, mentioning that a doctor or doctors were among those injured. Distressing video footage shared by the witness depicted individuals bleeding and lying on the ground, with one elderly person seen trying to assist another.
Notably, knife attacks have been reported in China previously, with incidents often occurring at educational institutions such as kindergartens. Last July, a similar attack took place in southeastern China's Guangdong province, where a man armed with a knife claimed the lives of six individuals and injured another at a kindergarten.
Authorities are actively investigating the recent hospital attack in Yunnan province, and efforts are underway to provide support to the victims and their families. The swift arrest of a suspect offers a glimmer of hope for justice in the wake of this tragic event.
