Kirkintilloch parents scramble for childcare as much-loved nursery announces shock closure

Kirkintilloch parents have been left scrambling for childcare after a local nursery announced its shock closure.

The Tender Loving Childcare Centre in the town was handed a week's notice by the new owner of the building. They are set to shut their doors for the final time on Tuesday, May 23.

Around 100 kids are believed to attend the nursery and they have now been left without care next week.

Parents were left baffled when they received an email regarding the closure yesterday, Wednesday May 17.

One mum told Glasgow Live: "I got a call from a friend telling me the nursery was closing with immediate effect.

"I phoned the nursery and they were beside themselves. There seems to be a business negotiation that has gone array.

"We now have until May 23 to find alternative care for our children. Dunbartonshire is already very expensive when it comes to provisions like that.

"We are struggling and I have not got a place for my child anywhere close by.

"My daughter loves going to nursery, she has her friends and the staff are amazing and we are all so sad."

Staff have also been left distraught by the news after they were 'forced to close'.

A segment of the email sent out by the nursery, which has been shown to Glasgow Live, reads: "It is with the utmost regret that I need to inform you that TLC are unable to trade from the premises from Tuesday 23 May 2023.

"We are completely devastated by being forced to close and cannot emphasise enough how terribly sorry we are to have to close what is and has been a successful nursery for the past 17 years."

The parent is now frantically looking for a place that can care for her daughter next week. However, she is also worried that the shock change could impact her child.

The loving mum said: "I am quite anxious about it.

"My daughter is still very young so there is going to have to be some change management.

"She doesn't like change and she likes a familiar setting. There is going to be have be a transition for her, which can be stressful for a wee child."

Ann Davie, Depute Chief Executive, East Dunbartonshire Council said, “We are providing parents with support and advice on alternative provision that may be available in the area.

"For those parents / carers who access their child’s funded hours at TLC Nursery, the Council’s Early Years Team will support the transition of the funding to an alternative local authority early years centre or funded provider.

"Following communication by the owners of TLC, we have sent out further information to parents to inform them of how and where they can access support regarding access to early learning and childcare places.”
