Kirkcudbright Riding of the Marches principals chosen

The officials for the annual Kirkcudbright Riding of the Marches have been declared.

Scott Milligan has been selected as cornet with Amie Blower as cornet’s lass.

Christine Findlater is pursuivant while Susan English has the role of courier.

Lynors for the July 14 spectacle are Thomas Jardine, Nikki McFarlane, Fraser Morrison and Eden McCulloch.

Honorary president for the event is Jane Maxwell – the first woman to hold the role.

Cornet Scott moved back to the area after living for a couple of years on Islay.

He said: “I worked on a farm before joining Tarff Valley seven years ago where I currently work.

“I’m a massive rugby fan, playing for Stewartry rugby Club.

“I also enjoy the occasional round of golf, shooting and some fishing.

“Having been invited to be lynor in 2017 I am delighted to be Kircudbright Cornet 2023 and cannot wait to represent this club over the summer.”

Cornet’s lass Amie is originally from Bombie Farm, Kircudbright and now lives at Bridge of Dee with her family.

She said: “I currently work as a vet part-time at Charnwood, Dumfries.

“My main interests are centred around animals with my two dogs, two brood mares and small flock of sheep.

“I first rode the Kircudbright ROM at the age of 10 and was a lynor in 2018.

“I am looking forward to everything involved in representing the town as this year cornet’s lass.”

Pursuivant Christine Findlater is from Elizafield Stables at Collin.

She works as a learning assistant for Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Christine said: “I am married to Raymond and have two sons, Ross and Ciaran.

“My main hobby is horse riding, enjoying hacking out and participating in local riding of the marches and fun rides.

“I first rode Kircudbright in 1988 and have supported it ever since, winning the Cornets Lass Chase in 1993 and best turned out three times. I am honoured to have been chosen as this year’s pursuivant and will carry out this role on 21-year-old mare Tikka.”

Susan English, the courier, is originally from Milton and now lives in Dumfries with her husband and dog, working for the Mental Health Directorate in the town.

She said: “I enjoy spending time visiting my family in Glasgow, long walks with my dog Scout and horse Bowman, who will be my trusty steed as I carry out my role as this year’s courier.

“I am looking forward to being part of this year festivities.”

Lynor Thomas Jardine, from Park Farm, Dalbeattie, runs Glenearly Caravan Park with his parents along with the farm.

He said: “I’ve recently bought a traditional gypsy cob after picking up a keen interest in horse riding.

“I am looking forward to representing Kircudbright Cornets Club this year and enjoying the festivities.”

Lynor Nikki McFarlane hails from Rotchell in Dumfries having moved from the Stewartry where she grew up.

The customer liaison officer for Scottish Power said: “I am a keen horse rider enjoying participating in local ride outs and competing at local shows.

“Supporting local events is something I feel passionate about and I regularly attend country fairs and agricultural shows.”

Lynor Fraser Morrison, from Shawhead, has just gone self-employed after working for Tarff for the last five years.

He said: “I will be heading out to New Zealand in August but after years of watching Kircudbright ROM from the sidelines it will be very exciting to be in the middle of it.

“I am really looking forward to being involved this year and being able to represent the town at various events over the summer.”

Lynor Eden McCulloch said: “I have lived in the Stewartry and been riding ponies since I could walk.

“I’ve had loads of amazing experiences with the pony club and enjoy helping the younger members, having successfully competed the length of the country on the British showjumping circuit.”

Honorary President for 2023, Jane Maxwell, has been a lynor and pursuivant, as well as secretary and treasurer of the club.

She said: “I am extremely honoured to become president, particularly as the first woman in this role.”
