King's Coronation order of events: date, times and schedule in full

Just days remain to wait for the King's coronation, as the big ceremony has finally just around the corner for royal lovers.

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla is set to feature the largest ceremonial parade including the military for 70 years. More than 6,000 men and women from the British and Commonwealth armed forces are set to lead the procession to and from Westminster Abbey.

With the late Queen's coronation lasting over three hours, Charles' crowning ceremony is reported by The I to be shorter than coronations of the past.

So, how long is it, and where does the procession go? Read on below for all the details.

How long is the coronation service?

According to Buckingham Palace, the official coronation is set to be scaled back from previous versions, but will still be "a solemn religious service, as well as an occasion for celebration and pageantry”.

The Palace also said that the service will "reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”.

However, the procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey is set to take around 30 minutes. The crowning then begins at 11am and should be finished by 1pm, making it around two hours long.

By this time frame, King Charles should be crowned by midday on Saturday, May 6.

Full timetable of the coronation events

From 6am, viewing areas will begin to open along the procession route. Then at 7:15am, guests heading to Westminster Abbey will arrive at security checkpoints in Victoria Tower Gardens.

From 9am, the congregation will begin to be seated within the Abbey. Between 9:30am and 10:45am, all the official guests of high ranks will arrive.

These include heads of state, overseas government representatives, Government ministers, First Ministers, former PMs, foreign royals and members of the Royal Family.

Also at 9:45am, the Sovereign’s Escort of the Household Cavalry will gather at Buckingham Palace to lead the procession.

At 10:20am, the procession, including the King and Queen, will set off from the Palace, and will arrive at the Abbey by 10:53am.

The coronation service then begins at 11am, and King Charles will be crowned by 12pm. The Archbishop of Canterbury places the St Edward’s crown on Charles’s head.

Trumpets will sound and gun salutes will be fired across the UK. The service will end at 1pm, and the newly-crowned King and Queen will begin the procession march back to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach.

The King and Queen will receive a royal salute upon their return to the Palace within the gardens, by the military. At approximately 2:15pm, the King, Queen and members of the Royal Family will appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace to watch the flypast.

The official route of the procession is much shorter than the Queen’s expedition around central London in 1953. The route stretches to just 1.3 miles – around a quarter of the length of the late Queen’s five-mile celebratory journey.

On their return, the King and Queen will follow Parliament Square, along Whitehall, around Trafalgar Square, through Admiralty Arch and down The Mall back to Buckingham Palace.
