King offers selectors more headaches with T20 wickets

Alana King has added more intrigue to Australia's spin dilemma, strengthening her T20 World Cup claims with two more wickets to save her side from an upset loss to West Indies.

After Georgia Voll and Ellyse Perry hit Australia to 5-164, King took 2-25 in St Vincent to put a dent in the home side's chase after they were 1-90 after 12 overs.

Those wickets helped prompt a late-innings fade-out, with the hosts eventually held to 4-147 as they succumbed to a 17-run defeat, with King named player of the match.

Despite being the country's preferred spinner in ODIs, King has struggled to crack into Australia's T20 side when it is at full strength in recent years.

With finger-spinner Sophie Molineux effectively playing as a captain only while managing a back injury, King took 3-14 in the series opener last week.

She then went for runs early on Saturday (Sunday AEDT), with Nicola Carey spilling a chance to remove Hayley Matthews off King's bowling over the rope.

But after Matthews and Stefanie Taylor put on 77 for the second wicket, it was King who removed them both.

The legspinner first had Matthews caught at mid-on for 56, before dragging out Taylor and having her stumped on 22 two overs later.

King's path to selection in Australia's best team for the World Cup is not a clear one, given first-choice leggie Georgia Wareham took 1-16 from her three overs.

Selectors have traditionally preferred Wareham in the T20 format, given she is quicker through the air and also offers the ability to bat higher in the order.

Australia would be extremely unlikely to play both in the same side in the World Cup, with Molineux set to be back bowling and Ashleigh Gardner also able to offer spin.

Asked if King's form was providing some headaches, Molineux suggested it was.

"She is, it's great to see Kingy out here. She's bowled some really hard overs too," Australia's captain said.

"The game was in the balance, we threw the ball to her and she did her job. Wolfy (Wareham) played her role as well.

"Kingy has got the wickets, but it's a really good team effort."

Earlier, Voll powered 39 from 22 balls at the top of the order and Perry struck 42 from 28, as Australia got away to a far quicker start than they did in the first T20.

Australia will enter the June tournament in England without a global trophy, with one more T20 against West Indies to follow before three ODIs on this tour.
