King Charles Coronation Northern Ireland: Events happening in each council area

Time is ticking until the coronation of King Charles III and events are set to happen across Northern Ireland.

The King will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort, on Saturday, May 6, at Westminster Abbey in London. As well as the ceremony a host of other events have been planned throughout the weekend. There is also an extra bank holiday on Monday, May 8, to mark the occasion.

The King's Procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey will take place before the Coronation Service, which starts at 11am on the Saturday. Once the service is over, it will be followed by the Coronation Procession from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace.

We have taken a look at council organised events happening across Northern Ireland to mark the occasion, including the ceremony being shown on big screens.

Below is our breakdown by council area for all the events you need to know about. If you are organising a street party, or local event, please email sarah.scott@belfastlive.co.uk and we can include it in future coverage.

Antrim and Newtownabbey

On Saturday, May 6, the Coronation ceremony will be broadcast live on big screens at both Jordanstown Loughshore Park and Antrim Castle Gardens.

On Sunday, May 7, you can head along to ‘The Big Lunch’ from 12noon to 4pm at Hazelbank Park and The Gateway in Antrim for some family fun, with inflatables and walk-about characters. Bring your picnic and join in the celebrations.

Then on Sunday evening, from 8pm to 10pm there will be a live broadcast of the Coronation Concert as well as local talent from ’The King’ (aka The Elvis Spectacular) at Jordanstown Loughshore Park and ‘Qween’ at Antrim Castle Gardens, plus fireworks and fun.

On Monday, May 8, you can get involved in The Big Help Out which encourages residents to try volunteering through a number of activities such as Spring Clean Ups, Horticultural Projects, Planting of Window Boxes for local villages etc, aiming to bring communities together and create a lasting volunteering legacy from the Coronation Weekend.

Ards and North Down

There are several celebratory and community events planned to mark the Coronation. The programme includes grant-supported community events, a school engagement programme, tea dances, tree planting, traditional craft workshops, and a Coronation exhibition.

Coronation Tea Dances on Friday, May 5, are now fully booked at Aurora Leisure Centre, Bangor and Queen's Hall, Newtownards.

To mark the crowning of the 62nd Monarch King Charles III, the Arts and Heritage service will host a series of workshops and craft-based activities. King Charles is an ambassador of heritage craft preservation and we invite you to celebrate his Coronation with us. More details on these can be found by clicking here.

Belfast

Watch the Coronation Service live from Westminster Abbey in London on a large screen in the grounds of Belfast City Hall on Saturday, May 6. There will also be free family fun on the lawns, including a photo booth and craft-making.

There are no tickets needed and the grounds of City Hall will be open as normal and the events are free. More details on exact times on family fun will be listed on the website and our social channels in due course.

Belfast City Hall will be illuminated on Sunday, May 7, to mark the Royal occasion.

Armagh Banbridge and Craigavon

The Lord Mayor Councillor Paul Greenfield and Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Tim McClelland will host a joint Coronation Tea Party on Wednesday, May 3, at the Seagoe Hotel (tickets are sold out for this event).

In addition, council has supported a number of borough-wide community organised events through the financial assistance programme, and is currently working in partnership with St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral on a Coronation Ceremony which will take place on Tuesday, May 2.

Derry and Strabane

The council is not organising anything but it is expected there will be some community events in the area.

Mid and East Antrim

The Coronation will be broadcast on big screens in Ballymena, Larne and Carrickfergus from 11am accompanied by a wide range of fun, family activities taking place including: arts and crafts, face painting, balloon modelling, circus skills workshops, inflatables, dance activities, laser tag and kids shows (available activities will vary depending on location).

As well as large outdoor screens at each venue, a range of free entertainment will be delivered at the People’s Park in Ballymena, Town Park in Larne, and Marine Gardens in Carrickfergus.

Mid Ulster

There are no official Council events being held.

Fermanagh and Omagh

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council is not organising any official events; however, the Council has approved a maximum budget of £25,000 to support events which are taking place over the Coronation weekend from May 5-9 May.

Following a recent public call out to groups and organisations in the area, Fermanagh and Omagh District Council have received 37 applications (34 small and 3 medium) seeking support in organising Coronation events that will be taking place between May 5-9 throughout the district.

Lisburn and Castlereagh

Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council will mark the Coronation of King Charles III with a programme of events for the local community.

The Coronation Ceremony of King Charles III at Westminster Abbey will be livestreamed on the screen in Market Square, Lisburn. Please come along and watch this historic moment with friends, family and neighbours.

Causeway Coast and Glens

Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council will be screening the Coronation on Saturday, May 6, and Coronation Concert on Sunday, May 7, outside Coleraine Town Hall.

Newry Down and Mourne

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has agreed a King Charles III Coronation financial assistance programme which will offer a number of grants for community groups and organisations who wish to join together in recognition to celebrate King Charles III’s Coronation.
