King Charles and Camilla will visit Wales tomorrow

King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort, are set to visit Wales on Friday, it's been confirmed. The Royals will attend a ceremony in Wrexham to celebrate the former town being awarded "city status" earlier this year.

The ceremony will take place at St Giles Church in the city, as reported by our sister site NorthWalesLive, and the Royal couple will arrive via the High Street Gates. There, they will be met by the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Clwyd, Mr Lloyd Fitzhugh and welcomed to the church by the Wardens of St Giles.

Rev Jason Bray will lead a short service in the church and King Charles will make a short speech, before he and Queen Consort Camilla will be invited to see significant items owned and cared for by the church, including a First Edition King James Bible and a rare early-14th century chalice, still in use today. The visit has been arranged to mark Wrexham becoming a city. The former-town, and seven other towns across the UK, were awarded "city status" as part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations earlier in the year.

Wrexham had previously applied to be classed as a city on three occasions - in 2000, 2002 and 2012 - but had been unsuccessful each time. However, last December, Wrexham Council’s executive board unanimously agreed to make a bid for city status once again.

This bid and bids from Colchester, Doncaster and Milton Keynes in England, Dunfermline in Scotland, Bangor in Northern Ireland, Douglas in the Isle of Man, and Stanley in the Falkland Islands were all approved and the former-towns are now officially classed as cities.

It’s hoped that becoming a city will be a "boost" to local communities and draw visitors and investment to the area - as it has with other former towns when they've become cities. For example, back in 2012, Perth in Scotland became a city and experts say the city's economy has "expanded by 12%" since then.

Speaking after it was announced Wrexham would become a city, then secretary of state for Wales Simon Hart said: "Wrexham has a wonderful history and an exciting future and I am absolutely delighted to see it awarded city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

"There is already much for Wrexham to be proud of and I hope city status will bring further recognition for everything the community has to offer and brings further opportunities for Wrexham’s prosperity and growth."
