King Charles’ £45million plans to save 18th Century stately home airing on Royal Grand Design

King Charles’ ambitious £45million plans to save an 18th Century stately home will be seen onscreen next week.

His Majesty’s charity The Prince’s Foundation purchased Dumfries House, in Ayrshire, Scotland in 2007.

The royal never had plans to live there but hoped to turn it into a gem that people will travel to visit and help regenerate the region.

Charles, who appears to share his love of Scotland with mum the late Queen Elizabeth II, previously admitted that taking on the massive project was an “appalling risk”.

In 2014, Queen Elizabeth visited Dumfries House for the first time to open a walled garden that was named in her honour.

Charles and Camila were reportedly at Dumfries House in September when they were told the Queen was ill.

The estate stretches out over an expansive 2,000 acres and boasts a stunning 18th-century house and adventure playground.

The then-Prince of Wales purchased it after the upkeep got too much for its previous owners.

In an article for the Dumfries House Magazine on the 10th anniversary of setting up the Trust, then King - who was then Prince Charles - wrote: “This project has been as much about people as it has about a physical place. The way that our local communities and our employees speak with such pride as to what has been achieved is enormously rewarding and wonderfully motivating.”

It was inherited by the 2nd Marquess of Bute in 1814 and remained in his family until the 7th Marquess sold it to the now-King a decade and a half ago.

Today, visitors are asked to put £3 in an honesty box to visit the garden.

The estate’s B&B has 22 bedrooms and prices start at £140 per room per night, according to the website.

The estate is also used for a range of education and training opportunities and is open to the public all year round.

The King has been credited with “saving” the estate from disrepair, with restaurants and accommodation, as well as walking trails, open to the public.

Dumfries House recently appeared on a special episode of The Repair Shop on BBC where the King visited the workshop on site.

Now viewers will see get an insight into His Majesty’s plans throughout the project in a special Royal Grand Design on Wednesday November 30th on ITV.
