Kind Glasgow pub feeding children in poverty during school holidays

Kind Glasgow publicans are helping feed some of the city's poorest children by offering free lunches throughout the school holidays.

Butty Bar in Glasgow is giving away 30 packed lunch bags per week to kids of nursery and school age living in the Drumchapel area. The watering hole is inviting struggling families to get in touch privately to access the parcels, even if they have more than one child.

Pub chiefs, who launched the charity mission on Monday, stress that the gesture is aimed purely at local youngsters.

A statement read: "We are going to be giving away, for free, 30 kids (nursery or school children) packed lunch bags every week for anyone struggling to take their kids out during the summer holidays. If this would help cut down any cost to you taking the kids out for a day please contact to book.

"We will have them ready for the next morning for you to collect. This is aimed at people who would be really struggling in the Drumchapel area only.

"If you have more than one small child that is absolutely fine. Just let us know how many and how old they are. Information will be kept private. It will be a first-come-first-served basis.

"Hope this helps a few families out. Happy holidays everyone."

Each packed lunch includes either a cheese or ham sandwich, a satsuma or an orange, a yogurt, a packet of crisps, a juice and a 'sweet treat'. Locals took to social media in their droves to hail pub staff for their 'amazing generosity' that will 'help a lot of families'.

One wrote: "What a great thing to do, I'm sure will help a lot of families."

Another added: "Amazing act of kindness."

A third commented: "Brilliant, well done The Butty helping out in the community again."

Another posted: "Superb and a pub with staff like no other."

A fifth wrote: "Well done, ladies. That's why I love The Drum, we have great people living here. Your generosity is amazing."
