Kind daughter's bid to free mum of 'debt burden' after being given months to live

A woman has told how her mum who is "always there for everyone" has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and she is trying to raise money to clear her debts so she doesn't have to deal with the " debt burden " in the time she has left.

Barbara Broadbent, from Stensall, near York, was told two weeks ago that she only has up to three months left to be with her husband and two daughters, reported YorkshireLive.

She fought oesophagus cancer in 2019 and had been in remission for the last three years but now cancer has been found in her lymph nodes and adrenal glands.

"She's unable to fight it this time", said daughter Sarah, 32.

Barbara is too weak to do all the things she would love to and "worried" about her built-up debt.

Sarah, who lives in Stensall, said: "This is particularly difficult for us as a family. My parents moved to Scotland about five years ago so I don’t get to see them that much. But with my job, I can travel and go and see them.

"I'm just trying to spend as much time with mum as I can. She has always been the type of mum you could go to about anything, she is always there for everyone."

Now Sarah wants to make sure her mum lives peacefully over the next few months.

An NHS worker for over 36 years, Barbara lives off her pension and with the recent rising cost of living, she has taken out loans.

Sarah added: "Over the years, for various reasons, she's taken out loans and credit cards to either help family members out or to just help pay for things that her pension just won't stretch to. This is something that I don't feel she should be burdened with at this time.

"She's concerned that any money that should be left for our family will be swallowed up by these debts, so I'm trying to raise enough funds to clear these off and therefore clear her mind.

"We don’t want her to worry, and she doesn’t want the burden. She wants any money to go to the family when she goes. We want her last bit of time to be a little less stressful."

The family have started a fundraiser to help Barbara pay off her £15,000 debts and donations can be made here.

Sarah, who owns a film company, and her boyfriend, will do a 79 mile walk across the Lake District in October to help raise more money.

"The thing is I don't know how long my mum but I hope she'll still be here and we can raise more," said Sarah.

"My mum has always been the most kind and generous person I've ever met. She's always helped anyone in need, whether that's emotionally, financially, or just with the most wonderful little gestures to brighten up a person's day.

"She has always been a people pleaser and when working at the NHS in the HR department she was always thinking of ways to help others."
