Kimberley Walsh is 'sad' there are no new pop bands for youngsters to look up and aspire to

Kimberley Walsh has admitted she's sad at the lack of new bands currently breaking through in the music industry for youngsters to look up to.

The singer-turned-presenter, 40, burst onto the scene as part of Girls Aloud in 2002 and went on to become one of the UK's biggest girl bands of all time.

However, the Sound of The Underground singers split up almost a decade ago and following Little Mix's decision to go their separate ways, Kimberley believes there is a severe lack of new groups in the charts.

Speaking to The Mirror she said: "I think, you know, pop bands in general are sort of not really there anymore, which is a bit sad I think for the younger people growing up.

"I know how it was for for us. We kind of looked up to and aspired to groups and it's exciting to watch bands, but I just don't really feel like this current generation really has that."

She continued to say she felt most bands around today are those who have regrouped after a period of time apart, calling it "a trend" and saying boy and girl bands "just aren't cool at the moment".

The mum-of-three did reveal she knows it will eventually "come full circle" though and joked that the next big band could be made up of her sons and her nephews - and reckons she'd be a hit as their manager.

"There's seven boys in our family," she revealed. "My three and my sister's got four boys, and maybe they'll form their own boy band and come back strong."

She is sure to disappoint Girls Aloud fans too as she confirmed there are currently no plans in place for her to reunite on stage with her former bandmates following Sarah Harding's tragic death last year.

Kimberley added: "There won't be any reunion of any sort. I mean, obviously, because of losing Sarah that's kind of just not on anybody's radar right now.

"We've tried to focus on doing something positive together for her instead, which is actually a really nice focus for us."

Kimberley and former band members Cheryl, Nadine Coyle and Nicola Roberts are taking part in a 5k Race For Life next month in a bid to raise funds for cancer research and also have a number of other fundraising ideas "bubbling" away.

Kimberley was speaking after joining forces with home improvement retailer Wickes to launch the Wickes Community Programme Competition, offering a community organisation the chance to win £10,000 to improve their space.
