Kilwinning Rangers physio set for VIP treatment as club legends turn out in force for testimonial

Long-serving Kilwinning Rangers physio David McCallum will be on the receiving end of some special treatment this weekend as the club gets set to host a testimonial match in his honour.

A Legends versus Allstars game – featuring a host of famous Kilwinning names from the past – will take place at Buffs Park at 1pm on Sunday, October 30 to mark McCallum’s incredible 20-plus years with the club.

Fans’ favourites including Paul Mullen, Tommy Sloan, Mark Cameron, and Jim Duffy – stalwarts of the all-conquering Kilwinning class of 1999 – will run out for a ‘Legends’ side managed by Bobby Dickson, Jim Cockburn and Ian Jardine.

They’ll come up against an ‘Allstars’ side featuring the likes of Barry Fleeting, Finlay Frye, Chris Strain and Stewart Maxwell with Mark Shanks, Ross Findlay and Robert Reilly in the dugout.

And with the Buffs first team not in action this weekend, the testimonial committee of Ian Cashmore, Ross Mackenzie, Brian Jardine and Willie Allan are hoping supporters will turn out in force to support the event.

Cashmore, who worked with McCallum during three different spells as a Kilwinning player and will be part of the 'Legends' squad, reckons the medical man has more than earned his moment in the spotlight.

He said: “Davie has been a figure at the club for as long as I can remember. He was there in 1999 when I used to go to games as a supporter and he’s been there on and off ever since.

“I think it speaks volumes for him when you see the calibre of players who are turning out for this game to support him.

“Davie was always considered one of the boys when I was there as a player. He’s a quiet guy but he’d join in the banter in the dressing room and everyone loved him.

“He’s very professional. Even when I wasn’t at the club, I’d go and see him if I had any wee knocks or niggles and he would never take anything for it. If you needed anything, he’d always be more than happy to help out.

“He’s just a great guy - the only downside I can think of is he’s a Dundee United fan. How a guy from Kilwinning ends up supporting them I’m not quite sure to be honest!

“Seriously though, it would be fantastic to see the supporters show their appreciation for Davie by coming to the game on Sunday because if anyone deserves a good turnout it’s him.”

Entry to the game is just £5 and there will be a raffle on the day.
