Kilwinning Rangers 3, Rutherglen Glencairn 0: Glens boss says his side 'switched off' in defeat

Rutherglen Glencairn manager Willie Harvey was left disappointed after his side’s second-half collapse at Kilwinning Rangers.

But Harvey says that was an improvement on the anger he felt following a similar implosion at Hurlford United last month.

After a strong first 45 minutes against Kilwinning, Glens conceded in the first 60 seconds of the second half, and went on to lose 3-0 on their travels in the West of Scotland League Premier Division, through goals from David Syme, Ally McColm and Thomas Collins.

That result comes two games after that 4-1 defeat to Hurlford and the boss admits that his players gave him plenty more in Ayrshire.

Harvey explained: “We lost our first goal in the first 45 seconds of the second half. You are up against it straight away and we had the weather conditions to deal with as well.

“Your team talk from half-time goes straight out the window. Everything you have spoken about and intended to do in the second half changes.

“It’s switching off. It’s coming in from the first half off the back off a horrible day. It was cold, you come back into the dressing room, and then we went out in the second half and got caught cold.

“Callum Shields held up his hand. As he went to mark his man, he got blocked by one of the opposition players. He wasn’t fouled, it was a play from a corner they worked on and it worked for them – nine times out of 10 it goes over the bar.

“Callum put his hand up to it and accepted responsibility.”

Harvey added: “I am not too unhappy.

“We didn’t go crazy at full time as we didn’t think it was justified.

“We were up against a good team.

“We matched them.

“Three-nil looks like a doing but it wasn’t.

“Against Hurlford we were really angry, but on Saturday we were just disappointed.”

It’s set to be a testing period for ninth-placed Glens, with a home double-header against Darvel on Saturday and Cumbernauld United on Wednesday.

Then it’s a Kilmarnock Pie League Cup second round tie with Conference A leaders Arthurlie. Harvey says he has a fit group to call on for what will be a tough run of fixtures.

He added: “We now have three games coming with Darvel, Cumbernauld and Arthurlie.

“So it will be a hard session ahead, but we are fit enough for it.”
