Kilmarnock v Livingston: Derek McInnes hoping for Friday night delight under lights

Derek McInnes is hoping for Friday night delight as Kilmarnock welcome Livingston to town.

The Ayrshire side host David Martindale's side under the Rugby Park lights tonight, and he's hoping to make it a special night.

From experience McInnes reckons that the odd Friday night game can tap into a market of fans who don't normally make Saturday matches.

And he's hoping that can boost his side ahead of a vital week ahead of the World Cup break.

McInnes said: "Fans will decide if it's here to stay. I quite like it. We did it a few times at Aberdeen and it was pretty successful. I don’t think we lost a game on a Friday night at home.

"All the youth football in Aberdeen was a Saturday afternoon. We always felt we were impinged on us because there were a lot of Aberdeen fans who couldn’t watch the team.

"I’m sure it’s similar and there are a lot of people in Ayrshire who play football or have kids who play football on a Saturday afternoon.

"We thought we could maybe tap into some extra supporters and give them the chance to watch the team. In this instance hopefully it’s similar.

"Home crowds have been pretty strong and we hope that continues and we can deliver for them. Ultimately fans turn up if you win games.

"There’s nothing better than kicking back and going to games on a Saturday. You don’t want to be skulking around on the back of a defeat.

"We can’t jump any places with a win but the three points would be important."

The game tonight will allow Killie an extra day recovery before Wednesday night's trip to Dundee United, and McInnes admits that was a handy incentive to move the game after a request from Livingston.

He said: "There was a request from Livingston because they wanted to mirror Aberdeen’s fixture before their game on Tuesday.

"We play Wednesday and were open to trying Friday night so there were no objections.

"It was put to me and the club said I could decide what we wanted. If it didn’t suit on the playing side you’d stick to 3pm
In this instance there was curiosity to try it."

Killie will be without Christian Doidge, Ben Chrisene, Calum Waters, Kyle Lafferty and Scott Robinson tonight.

Captain Alan Power added: “I don’t think I’ve experienced Friday night football too much but I like night games in general, it’s a good atmosphere and playing under the lights is always good. Hopefully it’s a good Friday night football.

“You always know what Livingston are about, a well drilled team. They get the ball forward early, so we’ll have to combat that and then concentrate on our own football and how we can take advantage of the game.
