Killing Eve fans compare finale to Game of Thrones after 'underwhelming' ending

Killing Eve fans have compared the finale of the assassin drama series to Game of Thrones after they said that the ending was 'underwhelming' and 'unsatisfying'. The final episode in series four saw Villanelle (Jodie Comer) tasked with a final mission to assassinate The Twelve by MI6 boss Carolyn Martens (Fiona Shaw).

There was hope that the series would follow the books by Luke Jennings and a happy ending for Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle was finally on the cards with the couple settling down together in St Petersburg. But their happiness was short-lived as Carolyn ordered for Villanelle to be murdered as soon as the mission was complete.

In the final scenes of the eight-part series, viewers saw Villanelle being shot on a boat whilst hugging Eve, just moments after she had revealed it was over. They both jumped into The Thames and Villanelle was then shot multiple times in the water and once Eve finally resurfaced without Villanelle she let out a shattering scream.

Fans were let divided with some saying it was "the worst ending to a show" they'd ever seen, many slammed the use of a 'tired' trope ending and others have asked for Phoebe Waller-Bridge - who wrote the first instalment back in 2018 - to rewrite the ending to the popular series.

Sam Copley tweeted: "Finally got round to watching #killingEve finale. Probably a worse ending than Game of Thrones" with Emily Lowrey adding: "The #killingeve finale gave game of thrones a run for its money in how utterly terrible, and unsatisfying it was. What wasted potential that series is".

Laura Stone posted: "Jesus Christ. Hats off to #KillingEve . That has to be the worst ending to a show I’ve ever seen. Devastating for all the wrong reasons. Shoddy and cruel. Like WTF?!?!?" and Sara Clements added: "The last minute of #KillingEve’s finale is void of heart & uses a tired trope carelessly. It feels like a slap in the face & discards V & Eve’s journey like it meant nothing. I’m disappointed, angry, & it hurts to know a show I loved is tainted for me now."

Karl Atwood said: "With the very disappointing series 4, and hearing there's a spin off. Why do the BBC have this obsession with spin offs? They never work. Just write and finish the original well.. that's how it should be. #killingeve." and Laura Lou added: "Not really sure what I think about #KillingEve . Underwhelming? Great acting, but...yeah."

"Just woke up and I’m still ****** at the #killingeve ending!!" Adam added: "The way they did the bury your gays trope oh I am TIRED! Villanelle and #villaneve deserved better". Steph added: "Absolutely cannot believe the writers sullied one of the greatest TV characters to ever exist by giving Villanelle such an undignified and unnecessary trope of an ending. How embarrassing."

"#KillingEve made me so happy seeing #villanelle & #Eve together after a long *** wait. We all wanted the ending of happiness but that was never going to happen when it’s inevitable that one of them will die. The title #KillingEve gives it away. In one way or another. #VILLANEVE" Rachael tweeted. "Just finished #KillingEve," Kathryn Brightbill tweeted: "I understand why everyone is mad about the ending, but honestly, it's the only thing that really makes narrative sense within the established framework of the story. It was never going to be a happy ending any more than Breaking Bad could have been."

You can watch all episodes of series four of Killing Eve over on the BBC iPlayer.
