Kill germs and bacteria with 'natural' method to clean a duvet - without washing machine

Keeping on top of housework can be challenging so getting to know all the tips and tricks out there can be a big help.

One thing you may be tasked with is making sure your duvets and pillows are clean. However, it can be hard to rid the bed time essentials of bacteria and stains if you do not have a washing machine with a big enough drum to fit them in.

Fear not, though, as Queen of Clean Lynsey Crombie has the solution for you. Lynsey said: “If you are lucky enough to have a large drum washing machine then most duvets can be washed this way using the duvet setting.”

If you do not have the setting on your machine, the cleaning guru added: “Most dry cleaners offer a duvet cleaning service”, reports the Express.

Another option is hanging your duvet on your washing line on a sunny day, Lynsey suggests, but a strong washing line will be required.

“Leave [the duvet] out in the fresh air and sunshine, the sun is a natural disinfectant so will help to kill germs and bacteria", she said.

If you duvets have stains on them, the expert suggests: “hydrogen peroxide and apply neat to the stain, once the stain has removed rinse away”.

When it comes to washing your pillows, there are a number of options depending on the type of pillows you have.

Lynsey said: “Only certain pillows can be soaked in the bath, feathered pillows and foam pillows most certainly can’t be.”

You can also pop your pillows on the washing line and leave them in the sunlight to dry out for a few hours.

To refresh and spruce up your pillow you can simply use some fabric spray before covering the pillow in a “thick, quilted pillow protectors”.

Much like duvets, "yellow staining" on pillows can be tackling by “using hydrogen peroxide”, Lynsey commented.

The expert also suggests you wash your duvet cover twice per year, with pillows to be washed two or three times each year.

You should also replace you duvets every five years to keep them fresh.

As for how many times you should wash your duvet cover, it is advised twice a year.

Pillows should be replaced every two to three years. Whereas duvets should be replaced every five years to keep them fresh.
