Kieran Tierney has been warned he’ll be warming Newcastle’s bench if makes the move to the Magpies.
The Scotland star has been doing just that for Arsenal after falling behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in Mikel Arteta’s pecking order. A summer exit appears to be on the cards for Tierney, who left Celtic for the Gunners in a £25million deal four years ago.
Newcastle are keen to recruit the left back after finishing fourth in the English Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time in two decades. Eddie Howe’s team are on an upwards trajectory and will be looking to get close to Arsenal next season. If Howe has his way, then Tierney will be helping him do that, should the Toon stump up the reported £35m the London club are after. However, former St James’s Park midfielder Dietmar Hamann reckons he’ll have a job getting into the side and can see him having to watch from the sidelines again.
“Dan Burn has played very well at left-back,” said Hamman, speaking to Casinos En Lign. “If Kieran Tierney was to go to Newcastle United because he's a part-time player at Arsenal, would it be any different at Newcastle? The defence and back four have been sensational this season. I can understand why Eddie Howe would want him because he's a very good player to have in your squad, but it remains to be seen if he's happy to stay as second choice, behind Burn.
"Burn is doing a fantastic job at left-back, especially for someone of his height. You have to have him in the team because he guarantees goals and defending in set pieces, it would be mighty tough for Tierney to get in the team.”
However, former Arsenal defender and france international Mickael Silvestre has urged his former club to hold on to Tierney, and do what they can to convince him he has a future in red and white. "I think it’s important that Arsenal find a way to retain Kieran Tierney,” he told BettingExpert.com.
“Fighting for the title, playing in the Champions League again, you need two international level players in almost every position. So, they need to find a way to convince him that he’s part of the plan for next season.”
