Kids stopped from seeing nan because of 'misery' house

Kids couldn't visit their nan due to antisocial behaviour on a street with a house of "misery".

Debbie who lives on Goldie Street in Anfield told the ECHO about the catalogue of criminal activity at a house that has now been boarded up by police. It comes after Liverpool Council revealed three privately rented homes across the city had been subject to closure orders - one on Goldie Street, one on Manningham Road in Anfield and one on Banner Street in Wavertree .

Liverpool Council has shared images of the two properties on its social media, which it said had been causing "misery" for neighbours and the local communities. The images show the three terraced houses with boarded up doors and windows and yellow notices in the windows.

In a tweet, the council said: "Anti-social behaviour and criminality linked to these privately rented properties in Anfield and Picton made life a misery for the local community. We worked with Merseyside Police to close them down as part of our commitment to making our communities safer."

The ECHO spoke to people living on Goldie Street who said it had been a "nightmare". Debbie has lived on the street her whole life.

In fact, she's lived in three different properties on the now quiet stretch of road in Anfield. Her current home was once occupied by her parents, and her grandparents before that.

She said the anti-social activity linked with the property at the end of the road had been "going on for about two years" and thinks action to evict those living there was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

She added: "There was drug use, cars pulling up all times of the day and night. And this was even before I moved into this house, you knew it was going on because it was up and down the street.

"No one could let their kids play out, my grandkids couldn't come down. It just wasn't nice. Everyone on the street had had enough. It's not fair on anyone."

Since the tennants have moved on, Debbie said Goldie Street has been "heaven". She said: "I love it here. This is a family street.

"Everyone looks out for each other and if you need a helping hand with anything there's always people to help you."

Unfortunately, Debbie thinks it won't be a simple process when it comes to getting new tenants: "Everyone has been saying they hope they put someone decent in there. But I believe inside isn't good.

"They need to do it up to a decent standard. The house has never had any luck. It's never been looked after."

Lauren moved into her home on Goldie Street with her three children in April 2021 and was pregnant with her fourth at the time. She said: "They'd have people in and out the house until 4 o'clock in the morning. It was a nightmare. We were here when the windows got smashed too.

"Ever since they've moved out the street has been lovely."

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said: "All three properties were linked to the use and supply of Class A drugs. The chaotic lives of the tenants were having a detrimental impact on the lives of people living and working in the area.

"In each case our private sector housing team collated evidence and worked with the community policing team and landlords to secure closure orders. If people are experiencing similar issues they should report it to us through our website at liverpool.gov.uk or by calling 0800 707 6245."
