Kids play in fountain of water as hydrant set off 'illegally'

Kids were seen playing in a fountain of water after vandals illegally set of a water hydrant.

Video captured on a mobile phone showed a fountain of water on Lee Vale Road in Gateacre on Wednesday, August 10, after a water hydrant was tampered with. The video shows a number of children playing in the water as it gushes out into the road.

A small stream of water was also captured flowing down a large stretch of the road. People living in the area reported the issue to United Utilities at 2.53pm after noticing they had no water and were not able to flush their toilets.

Engineers from United Utilities attended the site around three hours later and were able to fix the water hydrant. They confirmed the supply was "illegally set off".

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “There have been several instances of water hydrants being illegally set off in Liverpool this evening. Our teams will attend to turn these off as soon as possible, working with the support of other agencies to ensure they can do the work safely and stop the anti-social behaviour.

"Hydrant abuse is not harmless fun, and as well as disrupting water supplies it could put lives at risk. We thank customers for their patience while we address these incidents.”

United Utilities are also responding to incidents of water hydrants being illegally set off in Prenton, Wirral and Peel Road, Bootle.
