Khilafat movement: NIA searches houses of 3 in Thanjavur

THANJAVUR: Officers from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out searches at the houses of three people in Thanjavur for suspected links with the Khilafat movement.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the area as residents resorted to a protest against the searches.

The team searched the residences of Abdul Khader, 49, and Mohammed Yasin, 30, of Thaikkal Street at Keezha Vaasal and Ahamed, 37, of Cauvery Nagar in Thanjavur town on Saturday. The search commenced at 5.30am and lasted till 10am.

Sources said that the NIA officers seized the mobile phones and some identity cards from the three houses.

Muslim residents in the area resorted to a protest against the searches. The local police were deployed at the spot as tension prevailed due to the protest. Police managed to pacify the protesters as the NIA team left the spot.
