Key man reveals 'exciting and ambitious' plans which led to Nottingham Forest transfer

Midfielder Remo Freuler says Nottingham Forest’s “exciting and ambitious” Premier League project convinced him to make the move to the City Ground.

The 30-year-old made the switch from Atalanta earlier this month, having spent six years and made more than 200 appearances for the Italian side. The hope is he will prove to be just as key for the Reds as he was for his previous club.

Freuler was an integral figure for Atalanta. He arrived on Trentside with a wealth of experience, including at Champions League and international level, for Switzerland.

He admits it wasn’t an easy decision to leave Italy. But the love shown for him by the Reds, not to mention the lure of playing in English football’s top-flight, proved persuasive.

“The club worked hard for me and was able to present me with a project that is exciting and ambitious,” Freuler told Keystone-SDA news agency, when asked why he chose Forest. “I thought about this change carefully, it wasn't a gut decision within 24 hours.

“I'm convinced of what Nottingham is up to. Those responsible have put together a team that can survive in the first difficult year after promotion to the Premier League.

“It's good to see something completely new again. It takes a few days to really get there. But I'm not a teenager anymore - most people already knew where I came from, what role I played in Serie A. The respect towards me was palpable from day one.

“I have to prove myself again, that's the way it is. I have nothing left of the past. But that's okay too. This step will have a positive effect on my development.”

Freuler made his debut for Steve Cooper’s side on Tuesday night, putting in an impressive performance in the 3-0 Carabao Cup victory over Grimsby Town. He is now looking forward to testing himself in the league.

On the global stature of the Premier League, the summer signing added: “The clubs have impressive financial resources at their disposal. The charisma of the Premier League is gigantic.

“Accordingly, the incentive for me was great to be able to play at this top level. This transfer is exactly the right thing for my career. I'm really looking forward to the duels with the international greats.

“The use in the League Cup was agreed with the coach. Then I have more training sessions available to get going. And importantly, Nottingham got off to a good start. This brings calm and gives everyone self-confidence.”
