Kevin Thomson floats Steven Gerrard transfer link and hopes Rangers relationship can boost career prospects

Kevin Thomson hopes his time working alongside Steven Gerrard could help him boost his coaching career.

Thomson worked with his former side as a youth coach before making the move to management joining Kelty Hearts as their gaffer in May 2021. The 37-year-old lead the Fife club to promotion after winning Scottish League Two. But the boss went on to resign in May in a bid to secure a full-time job in the game.

During his time at Rangers as a coach he was able to build a relationship with then-manager Steven Gerrard. And the former Gers star is hoping his bond with the now Aston Villa manager could help him as he ploughs on in his own coaching career - with the hopes he could secure an Aston Villa loanee if he bags a new job. The former midfielder spoke about the moment Gerrard opened up his office door to him during their time at Ibrox together when he sat down to record the Open Goal Podcast.

Speaking on the podcast about Steven Gerrard, Thomson said: “I had to go and see him (Gerrard) and he sat over his office and said ‘If I’m going to help you get to here one day, which I know is what you want to do, then I need to open a door for you so my door is always open’

“We’ve got a good enough relationship and understanding that I can drop him a message to ask if he could help us out. If I was to get a job I’d be on the phone to see if we could potentially get a loan player.

“To me hopefully, and it gives me confidence as an individual. That the manager seen something quite good in me that he was willing to open his door.”
