Kevin Muscat can be Rangers' Ange Postecoglou as Steve Corica talks up 'box office' battle

Rangers have been told Kevin Muscat could do an Ange at Ibrox.

The former Rangers star has been touted as a possible boss with Gio van Bronckhost ’s future in the balance after a struggling start to the season. Ex-Socceroos star Muscat has followed in the footsteps of Celtic gaffer Ange Postecoglou by also winning titles in his homeland and Japan.

The former Rangers midfielder – who won the Treble at Ibrox in 2002/03 – was the Hoops manager’s No.2 at Yokohama F Marinos before he moved into the hotseat and delivered the Japanese crown this month. Sydney FC boss Steve Corica is tight with both bosses – and he’s convinced Muscat could have a similar impact at Ibrox as title-winning Postecoglou has pulled off at Parkhead. Corica – who led his side to a 2-1 friendly win against Celts Down Under – said: “Yes he could, why not? Kevin obviously took over Yokohama after Ange. He had a lot of turnaround of players and stuff like that.

“But he went on and won the league this season, so I’m sure Kevin could do a great job at Rangers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Kevin’s being linked with the job.

“He’s just won the J-League in Japan while he’s also won the A-League here. So Kevin’s very capable, he’s a very good coach and I know he’s very thorough in what he does.

“Wherever he’s gone he’s won trophies. So, I have no doubt he would do a great job at Rangers.

“Of course Kevin would take on Ange. He’s very competitive, Kevin. He’s a fiery character and yes, obviously, very good at his job. I’m sure one day he probably will end up at Rangers.”

Corica admitted it would be box office to watch his old pals squaring up in Scotland. He said: “It would be fascinating. Kevin obviously took over from Ange at Melbourne Victory and had a very successful period there too. Then he followed Ange to Yokohama and won the league there, just like Ange.

“Both of them are doing very well and I think both of them are helping Australian coaches as well. Obviously in the J-League, they’ve both won trophies.

“Ange has moved on to Scotland and won trophies there. So, that’s only helping the Australian coaches. There are a lot of good Australian coaches around. That’s maybe paving the way for others to follow Ange and Kevin.”

Corica was delighted to get one over Postecoglou in the Harbour City yesterday when his Sydney side came from behind to claim a famous win. He said: “Ange is a good guy, he’s always respectful.

“Celtic are also a very good team. We knew what we were up against and we needed to perform well against them.

“The boys stood up tonight. They played well, scored two good goals and defended well, that’s the main thing.

“Celtic are a quality team and they play good football. Obviously, that’s the way I like my team to play as well.”
