Kerry Katona says she has been 'ridiculed, mocked and crucified' over her mental illness and admits she still suffers to this day.
The former Atomic Kitten singer, 41, shared an emotional post on Instagram as she celebrated World Bipolar Day, and spoke candidly about her mental health.
Kerry told her 797,000 followers she still has “far to go” on her journey, and posted an inspiring quote that hinted at her mental health struggles.
“Having bipolar disorder does not mean you are broken, it means you are strong and brave battling your mind every single day,” it read.
In the caption, Kerry touched upon the abuse she’s faced because of her bipolar, and urged others to be kind and understanding to those suffering with their mental health.
“#worldbipolarday for a years and years I was ridiculed, mocked and crucified because of my mental illness BIPOLAR!!! We’ve come a long way but we still have far to go!” she began.
“Every day is a working progress! Just because of a label I have been given it does not define me as a person! Don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Kerry added.
“Who wants to be normal? Not me!!! But who says we can’t have a normal life?? In fact we can have an extraordinary life! Educate yourself people!!!” she concluded.
Her post comes after she appeared on GB News on Wednesday to discuss her infamous interview on This Morning in 2008.
Viewers were stunned to see Kerry slurring her words and looking unwell, and the mum-of-five has always insisted the incident was down to her medication.
“It was my bipolar medication but people just assumed I was off my head on drink or drugs. Even after I explained I had an illness nobody thought to ask me about it or about the medication I was on which was making me that way. I did not have a clue what bipolar was. I thought I was going mad,” she told hosts Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster.
“And then I went on lots of different medication which they call it trial and error to find the right kind of dosage for your manic and depressive episodes,” Kerry continued, as she touched upon the This Morning interview.
“And there was a very famous interview where because of my medication, it makes your speech very very slow because I can be very manic and things are 100 miles an hour in my head,” she added.
