Kerry Katona opens up on 'traumatic' hospital trip due to 'unbearable' illness

Kerry Katona has spoken about how she suffers from an 'unbearable' health condition.

The former Atomic Kitten star was rushed to hospital recently and worried fans when she shared a snap of an IV drip in her arm from her bed. The 41-year-old had been suffering from stomach problems which caused excruciating pain.

She said that when the pain became "unbearable" she knew she had to go to hospital. Kerry initially thought the pain was being caused by a cyst in her ovary that was discovered last year, but she was later diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

IBS is a chronic condition that affects the large intestine, and symptoms include stomach pain, severe bloating, wind, diarrhoea and constipation. In her latest column for OK! magazine, Kerry shared more information about her debilitating condition, and her "sad and traumatic" visit to hospital.

She said: "I was in hospital over the weekend, which wasn’t ideal. I’ve been having stomach problems and I initially thought the pain might have been something to do with the cyst in my ovary that I discovered last year.

"But it turned out it was IBS. My stomach swelled up and was hurting badly. It’s been happening a lot – and I get these horrible, eggy burps. My stomach looks so big, I could pass for pregnant.

"It’s so painful at times – I feel like I want my belly to rip open. I’ve been so busy I put off going to the doctor – but the pain became unbearable, so I had to go to hospital. Thankfully, everything is fine. But staying in A&E on a Friday night was an experience. It was scary, sad and traumatic."

Kerry went on to praise the staff at the hospital as she said that they need a pay rise. She said: "NHS nurses and doctors need a pay rise. The things they have to deal with is unbelievable and people take it for granted."

The singer is currently awaiting tests to find out what foods cause her stomach to react badly. She will learn more about what she can and can't eat.
