IDUKKI: A 25-year-old woman was admitted to Kottayam medical college hospital on Tuesday after her husband threw acid on her. The man fled after the incident but was nabbed from a bar.
Police said the woman suffered 40% burns. The incident occurred around 10am at Manjapra near Kolapra in Idukki.
According to Thodupuzha deputy SP A G Lal, the accused, Rahul Raj (30), a resident of Karimkunnam, and the woman, identified as Vazhamalayil Sona Sunny, a resident of Mrala near Thodupuzha, had got married in 2015. Their relationship turned sour soon and after about nine months the y started living separately.
Police said Raj suspected that Sona was in a relationship with another youth identified as Abhijith but later she filed a sexual abuse case against him.
Recently, the woman and Rahul met again and they apparently agreed to live together. But the next day she told Rahul that she has changed her mind and that she has decided to live her life with Abhijith. This provoked Rahul, and he attacked her with acid, police said.
The woman was staying with a relative when she came under the attack. Rahul, who ran away from the spot, was arrested from a bar at Muttom.
“A case has been registered against him under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 326 (A) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid),” said Lal.
“The woman’s condition is stable. She has 9% burn injury on her face. We will collect evidence with the accused on Wednesday. The couple have not yet got a divorce,” said the officer.
A woman was arrested after she poured acid over a man's face in November last year at Irumpupalam near Adimali in Idukki allegedly over unrequited love. The youth had lost vision in one eye in the attack. In connection with the incident, the police had arrested Sheeba Santhosh, 35, a resident of Mannamkandam in Adimali.
