Kenya mourns victims of fatal school fire

EYE ON AFRICA © FRANCE 24

A horrific and devastating fire: these are the words of Kenyan President William Ruto following the tragedy that struck a school in Nyeri County. The blaze broke out in a boarding school late on Thursday night. By Friday, 18 children were confirmed dead and dozens were still unaccounted for. The incident has sparked grief and anger over the widespread flouting of fire safety regulations in the country.

In Algeria, polls are set to open in the presidential election on Saturday. But the country’s voters appear largely apathetic regarding an election they see as unlikely to change the status quo as incumbent Abdelmadjid Tebboune is poised to win a second term.

Also in today's edition: Paris is hosting the International Festival of Films of the African Diaspora. Swiss-Egyptian documentary director Nadia Fares speaks to FRANCE 24 about her deeply personal film "Big Little Women", which gives voice to generations of Egyptian women.
