Kenya Faces Nationwide Protests Over Proposed Tax Hikes

Cuba's Christmas not so merry this year as economic crisis grinds

Kenya is currently experiencing widespread protests in response to proposed tax increases, with citizens planning a 'total shutdown' of the country on Tuesday. The demonstrations, triggered by the Finance Bill 2024, have united people under the banner of '7 Days of Rage,' indicating a prolonged period of unrest.

President William Ruto has expressed a desire to engage in dialogue with the protesters and has voiced his support for their actions. However, there are reports of security forces allegedly abducting prominent Kenyans, particularly individuals with significant social media followings.

An ongoing investigation is looking into the disappearance of around 12 individuals who were reportedly taken in the middle of the night before the scheduled protests on Tuesday. The list of missing persons includes bloggers, content creators, human rights activists, a medical professional, and a parliamentary staff member, as confirmed by the news agency's director.

Efforts have been made to contact the Kenyan police for their response to these allegations.

These protests coincide with Kenya's increasing global recognition, as US President Joe Biden recently designated the country as a 'major non-NATO ally.' This decision, announced during President Ruto's state visit to the White House, marks a significant milestone in the 60-year diplomatic relationship between the United States and Kenya.
