Kentucky officials tout Winter Weather Awareness Week

Kentucky officials are trying to get ahead of winter weather issues. While the commonwealth is still experiencing mild conditions, the National Weather Service and Kentucky Emergency Management are touting Winter Weather Awareness Week. It’s a time to remind people that snow, ice and freezing temperatures can be dangerous and the time to prepare for the possibility is now.

Mike Kochasic is a meteorologist at the Louisville NWS. He said people should have a weather kit ready.

“Make sure you have those extra batteries, an alternate source to charge your sell phone if you lose power. Having a NOAA Weather Radio is a great backup option, too, so you stay informed with current weather warnings, watches advisories. That’s battery powered and that’s on 24/7/365,” said Kochasic.

The meteorologist said the Commonwealth is looking toward a slightly warmer and wetter winter, but it only takes one storm to cause disruptions.

“If you get one massive cold front come through that’s really strong, that can bring cold weather and snow and ice. And that’s why we’re taking the time for Winter Weather Awareness Week, to make sure folks know things to prepare for and also different ways they can have a plan in place so that when this does happen, they’re ready,” said Kochasic.

Kochasic added that now is a good time to brush-up on the difference between weather watches, warnings and advisories.
