Aces star Kelsey Plum did not expect her new husband, Raiders tight end Darren Waller, to be part of a blockbuster trade to the Giants on Tuesday.
In fact, the Raiders’ move to deal Waller to New York in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft—pick No. 100—came as a surprise to many within the NFL community. The dynamic couple married on March 4, probably with the thought they’d both be able to live and play for their respective teams in Las Vegas.
Later Tuesday night, Plum made a clever joke as to why Raiders head coach Josh McDaniels may have sent Waller to the Big Apple. In response to ESPN analyst Robert Griffin III suggesting McDaniels isn’t a romantic, Plum tweeted, “Prolly cause he wasn’t invited to the wedding lol.”
Griffin’s tweet could have some truth to it. Prior to the couple’s wedding, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur reported that Waller was not happy about McDaniels leaking the story to reporters at the NFL scouting combine. At the time, the couple had not gone public about their plans to get married.
After Tuesday’s trade, Waller and Plum are now separated by three time zones and roughly 2,500 miles. One has to think Plum and Waller will not be ecstatic about the Raiders’ decision.
