Viral TikTok food critic Keith Lee has broken his silence after eating what appeared to be a worm whilst trialling a Seattle sushi restaurant last week. Lee assured his audience that he was okay before slamming the restaurant, FOB Sushi Bar, for rejecting there was anything wrong with the sushi and not taking responsibility for another individual allegedly being hospitalised after eating there.
“I didn’t see anything until somebody pointed it out. I can’t confirm or deny what it was, but I can confirm I am okay,” Lee said in a TikTok to his worried audience.
“I appreciate the people who actually did reach out and were worried about me. I’m alright. The only reason I’m making this video is because I just saw a video of somebody who went the day after us and how they were hospitalised.”
Lee says that due to the severity of the situation, he felt compelled to use his platform to speak out about it.
“I’ve already said it a thousand times, I don’t believe in tearing down any business,” he continued.
“But at the same time, people’s health are on the line (sic). If somebody is saying they’re in hospital, and there’s something moving in the food, I absolutely think there’s accountability that should be taken and it’s something you can learn from.”
Footage of Lee eating the sushi went viral after eagle-eyed fans noticed something that looked like a worm wriggling seconds before he took a bite. It sent the platform into a frenzy with fans wondering whether Lee was okay, begging the beloved creator to make a statement.
Lee went on, disagreeing with the restaurant’s claim that the thing moving on camera was a result of the “natural elasticity or the pressure of chopsticks when applied” to the sushi.
“I personally don’t agree with it, because I’ve had sushi a thousand times, and I held sushi a thousand different ways, and never once have I seen sushi behaving that way,” he said.
“Again, that’s not me saying it was worm or it was a parasite. I’m just saying it was nothing that I did on my end.”
While Lee admits that there is a small risk involved when eating sushi, he says he personally wishes FOB Sushi Bar would take responsibility.
“I just personally would wish that they would come out and they would be more accountable about it nonetheless only now I can do is control what I do, and I’m coming out and I’m saying I’m okay,” he concluded.
After presumably feeling the heat from Lee’s 16.7 million TikTok followers, FOB Sushi followed up with another statement and announced it would be closing its two locations until further notice.
“In response to recent food safety concerns, we have decided to close our FOB Sushi locations in Seattle and Bellevue until further notice,” the statement read.
“Your health and safety are our highest priorities. We are conducting a thorough investigation to address the situation and will take all necessary measures to prevent it from happening again.”
The business concluded their statement by apologising to their customers.
