Keir Starmer says Boris Johnson has 'got to go' amid Number 10 'birthday party'

Sir Keir Starmer said the Prime Minister has 'got to go' after Downing Street admitted that a birthday party was held for him during lockdown.

As the latest party scandal emerged, the Labour leader said Boris Johnson is a 'national distraction' and called again for him to resign.

A tweet posted by Sir Keir last night said: "The Prime Minister is a national distraction.

"Millions of people are struggling to pay the bills, but Boris Johnson and his government are spending the whole time mopping up their own rule-breaking, sleaze and deceit.

"He’s got to go."

Sir Keir has led the calls for Boris Johnson to stand down in recent weeks, after a series of claims of rule-breaking parties in No 10 have emerged.

Senior civil servant Sue Gray is leading an investigation into the claims, with her findings set to be published this week.

ITV News revealed the latest bash last night, as it was reported that 30 guests attended a birthday party for the Prime Minister in the Cabinet Room on June 19, 2020.

Social mixing indoors was banned at the time.

At the surprise party - reportedly organised by his wife Carrie - guests ate M&S nibbles and presented Mr Johnson with a cake as they sung 'happy birthday'.

Downing Street said the Prime Minister only 'briefly' attended for 10 minutes.

A No 10 spokeswoman said: “A group of staff working in No 10 that day gathered briefly in the Cabinet Room after a meeting to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday.

"He was there for less than 10 minutes.”
