KEIR Starmer has said Glasgow should not host the Eurovision Song Contest next year.
The Labour leader said he would like to see Liverpool welcome the competition, which the UK is set to host on behalf of 2022 winners Ukraine due to the ongoing war.
The BBC confirmed on Tuesday Liverpool and Glasgow had been selected as the final two cities bidding to hold the contest as they saw off the likes of other shortlist contenders Manchester and Sheffield.
Glasgow has long been a favourite with the bookies, given the appearance of the OVO Hydro in the film Eurovision: The Story of Fire Saga starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams.
Eurovision commentator Graham Norton said Glasgow would be a “great place” to host the much-loved music extravaganza, telling STV News: “Every taxi driver of Glasgow is going to be saying: ‘Yes! Come on!'”
Starmer - who is currently in Liverpool for Labour’s conference - was asked by BBC Breakfast which of the two cities he wanted to win.
He said: “These are always difficult questions.
“Obviously, I want them both to do well. But here I am in Liverpool so I’ve got to give them the nudge.”
Former Eurovision winner Lulu also said Glasgow deserved to host Eurovision as it had the “audience with the biggest hearts”.
She said she would be “personally thrilled” to see her home city welcome the contest.
