Dalton Mills fire: Huge inferno erupts at old mill used in Peaky Blinders

A team of 100 firefighters are dousing the flames of an ongoing inferno after it erupted earlier today at an old mill used to film Peaky Blinders.

Footage from the scene shows black smoke billowing into the air above a raging fire which has consumed the roof of the Dalton Mills, in Keighley, West Yorkshire.

The inferno can be seen rising over nearby homes and businesses - and local residents are being advised to keep doors and windows closed.

The fire service has sent 20 crews to contain the fire, which has affected 100 per cent of the Grade II listed building.

Fans of Brit gangster drama Peaky Blinders will recognise the mill as one of the filming locations seen in the popular BBC series, Yorkshire Live reports.

As well as Peaky Blinders, starring Cillian Murphy as the head of the Shelby crime family, the listed mill has been used as a set for The Great Train Robbery and Downton Abbey, as well as the 2016 feature film The Limehouse Golem, starring Bill Nighy.

Dalton Mills was once the biggest textile mill in Yorkshire and a major regional employment hub with around 2,000 workers.

This afternoon Bradford Council announced they have opened The Leisure Centre in Keighley as a rest centre to provide shelter for residents affected.

Earlier West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the fire had broken out on Twitter, saying: "We are currently in attendance at a fire at Dalton Mills, Keighley.

"There is a lot of smoke in the area & residents are advised to keep doors/windows closed.

"Please avoid travelling through the area. Updates to follow."

In a statement, West Yorkshire Police told Yorkshire Live: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a large fire on Dalton Lane, Keighley.

"Police are assisting the fire service and urge local residents to keep doors and windows shut.

"Road closures are currently in place, please avoid the area."

The mill, which closed in the 1990s after falling into disrepair, first opened in 1869, according to the Yorkshire Post.

In its heyday of 1869 to 1877, the mill was a major regional employment hub, with as many as 2,000 workers.

Arsonists targeted the mill in 2011, leaving a vacant wing of the site completely destroyed.

It is currently used as a filming location - most famously as the backdrop for episodes of Peaky Blinders.

Fire crews are also being supported by Yorkshire Ambulance Service 's Hazardous Area Response Team.

It is reported several roads nearby have been closed.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for a statement.
