Keep, loan or sell - every single Cardiff City star assessed ahead of massive summer window

Cardiff City are facing a huge summer ahead of next season.

Steve Morison and his players offered the perfect tonic to the South Wales derby humiliation at home to Swansea City with an impressive comeback win over Reading on Saturday. Indeed, for all the doom and gloom from the heavy defeat to the Swans, Cardiff have now only lost one of their last six games.

Morison himself, clearly delighted by the reaction from his players in Berkshire, says the club are now in a "really good place" and, with their Championship status officially secured, the focus is clearly going to start to turn towards the summer. Indeed, plans over recruitment and decisions over who to keep in the building will gather pace over the coming weeks.

So, who should Cardiff keep? Who should they sell? Who should they let out on loan?

Alex Smithies

Has been a fantastic presence between the sticks for the Bluebirds, having established himself as number one. Clearly highly rated by Morison, but he's believed to be be one of the higher earners at the club.

Verdict: In an ideal world, you'd keep him. But financial constraints mean he's increasingly likely to depart, with a goalkeeper understood to already be on Cardiff's wishlist.

Dillon Phillips

Has been more than capable in deputising for Smithies when called upon. Called back into the side for the win over Reading and duly delivered an assured performance.

Verdict: Probably depends on who Cardiff manage to bring in. If he's playing second fiddle once more, it's perhaps time to consider a sale.

Mark McGuinness

Has been a regular at the back this season, and still has plenty of good years ahead of him. Seems an important player in this squad.

Verdict: Keep

Joel Bagan

Has looked a little shaky in recent games, but the quality of previous performances this season suggest he still very much has a bright future in the capital.

Verdict: Keep

Sean Morrison

Has been a tremendous servant to the club. Still a great leader, and he boasts the sort of experience that could prove valuable in what's otherwise a very young squad.

Verdict: In an ideal world, keep

Aden Flint

Has probably been one of Cardiff's most consistent performers this season, but is another whose contract is up at the end of the season. Has his admirers within the club, and is surely more than capable of playing a role next term, but an exit seems a real possibility.

Verdict: Could be time to move on.

Curtis Nelson

Was a regular in this XI until a recent injury, during which time Perry Ng and McGuinness cemented their place in Morison's backline. Started win over Reading, and even took the captain's armband at one point. Likely to be a part of plans next season.

Verdict: Keep

James Connolly

Is one of the first names on the teamsheet under Joey Barton at Bristol Rovers. Cardiff are understood to be delighted by his progress across the Severn. With a few players in his position likely to leave, he may well see next season as an opportunity.

Verdict: Keep.

Tom Sang

The 22-year-old has been in and out of the team on loan at St Johnstone. Has plenty of admirers in south Wales, but hasn't yet been given a real chance to impress. Capable of playing at right-back or in the centre of midfield, there might well be a player in there somewhere.

Verdict: Contract is up next summer, but he's too good a player not to at least have another look at.

Ciaron Brown

Has fallen out of favour at Cardiff and doesn't seem to be in their future plans. Has done well on loan at Oxford, but probably not done enough to extend his current deal beyond the end of this season.

Verdict: Will surely leave this summer.

Cody Drameh

Been one of Cardiff's best players since arriving from Leeds United on loan in January. Understood to be open to another spell in the capital, but will be assessed by Leeds United in the summer before any decision on his next move is made.

Verdict: If it's possible, 1000 per cent keep.

Perry Ng

Has flourished since moving into a new centre-back role, although admittedly he looked a little clunky in the middle of a back four on Saturday. Likely to be a part of Cardiff's defensive plans for years to come.

Verdict: Keep

Will Vaulks

After a poor spell earlier in the season, he's seemingly regained his mojo a little in recent weeks. A steady presence in this squad, but is another whose contract situation has placed his future into uncertainty.

Verdict: A very useful player, but probably not one who would be considered irreplaceable.

Leandro Bacuna

Hasn't kicked a ball in a Cardiff shirt since his disastrous red card against Bournemouth earlier in the season. Contract up this summer and a departure seems nailed on.

Verdict: Needs a new start.

Joe Ralls

Another one who's out of contract at the end of the season. His consistency in the middle of the park, along with his years of service and dedication to the cause, means that he remains a popular player with fans.

Verdict: Of all the players out of contract this summer, he's the one many would most like to stay. Keep.

Ryan Wintle

Has impressed since coming back from his short stint on loan back in January. Already looks an important player in this squad.

Verdict: Keep

Alfie Doughty

Saw his start to life south Wales clipped a little by injury, but has nevertheless managed to a establish himself as a reasonably steady option out wide. Took his goal at Reading brilliantly.

Verdict: Probably won't be brought back.

Marlon Pack

Has gradually fallen down the pecking order in this squad. Hasn't started a league game since January and, with his contract up at the end of the season, it seems unlikely he'll be staying.

Verdict: Could probably use a fresh start.

Keenan Patten

Has been on loan at Hereford since January. Looks unlikely to really be a part of Cardiff's plans, particularly with his contract up at the end of the season.

Verdict: Probably time to go.

Tommy Doyle

Gone off the boil a little recently, but remains a classy presence in midfield. Looks destined for the Premier League, but Cardiff will be hoping they can get him back for another season.

Verdict: If it's possible, keep.

Rubin Colwill

A player with a big future for club and country. Many believe he should be afforded more game-time such is the excitement around his ability. A stunner at QPR and a cool finish on international duty with Wales have shown his capabilities in front of goal to full effect recently.

Verdict: May well be interest in his signature. But unless it's an offer too good to refuse, Cardiff simply have to keep him.

Kieron Evans

Has been in and out of the side at loan club Linfield FC. Has enjoyed first-team minutes at City under Mick McCarthy and Morison, but is likely to currently be down the pecking order of options.

Verdict: Another loan spell seems the best option.

Sam Bowen

Injury stunted a promising start to this season. Future looks now looks uncertain.

Verdict: A loan spell could be beneficial for all involved. Can't rule out a sale if the right offer comes in.

Eli King

Has been in and around the matchday squad in recent weeks, but game-time hasn't quite come yet. Enjoyed a start at Anfield back in January and has been tipped by Morison for a bright future, but could maybe do with some minutes elsewhere.

Verdict: A loan spell next term might well do him some good.

Jordan Hugill

Has, on the whole, been impressive for the Bluebirds since joining at the end of January. Has netted four goals since his arrival and has added an injection of physicality up front. Many would like to see him back next season, but Norwich's plans for him remain uncertain.

Verdict: If there's any chance of it happening, he'd be a decent player to keep around.

Uche Ikpeazu

His role has largely been as an impact sub. Has scored three goals from the bench, and has already established himself as a fans' favourite. Boro would likely want to sell him this summer in a bid to recoup the £750,000 paid for him, which may well put him beyond Cardiff's reach.

Verdict: There will probably be some sections of fans that will want to keep him, but the numbers probably don't add up

Isaac Vassell

Has made four appearances in three years due to a succession of injuries. Out of contract this summer and unlikely to stay.

Verdict: Fresh start needed.

James Collins

Has found it tough at times in the capital. No one can fault his effort, but a tally of three goals in 29 outings has dented confidence in his abilities. Should Cardiff bring a striker or two on board this summer, it's difficult to see where he fits in.

Verdict: If the right offer comes in, sell.

Mark Harris

Could probably add a few more goals to his game, but the Wales international is largely seen as an important squad player. Has made some useful contributions at times, particularly from the bench.

Verdict: Keep

Max Watters

Just hasn't managed to get going in the capital. A player who arrived with plenty of promise, but hasn't quite delivered. Was substituted after only 37 minutes against Coventry City and will need to produce something special if he's to convince Morison he's worthy of a future here.

Verdict: Could well be one they might look to cash in on.

Isaak Davies

The young Welshman has made big progress in the last few months. Like Colwill, there are some who believe he's worthy of more game time than he's getting. An exciting prospect.

Verdict: Keep.

Chanka Zimba

Has previously been tipped as the next big talent to emerge from Cardiff's academy. Hasn't quite made the step up to the first-team picture after some prolific form for the under-23s at the start of the season. Has seen his progress on loan at Northampton curbed by injury too.

Verdict: Another loan spell seems like the best option.

Gavin Whyte

Has been in superb form for Oxford United, where he's earned 10 assists and scored one goal. Hasn't quite managed to crack it in the capital yet, but will have certainly impressed his parent club.

Verdict: Might be one to keep around next season, although if an acceptable offer came in, it could be one to consider.

Josh Murphy

Has had a disastrous loan at Preston. A lack of game-time, and a bad mid-season injury, has prevented him from making any sort of meaningful impact.

Verdict: Just hasn't worked out. Should be allowed to depart.
