Keanu Reeves reacts to Matthew Perry's shock insults about him in his new book

Keanu Reeves has reacted to comments from Matthew Perry as he asked why 'Keanu Reeves still walks among us'.

The Friends star caused a stir after he wrote in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, 'Why is it that the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die, but Keanu Reeves still walks among us?'

Matthew has since apologised for his words and said that he is actually a 'big fan' of Keanu.

He also admitted that he should have used his own name instead of a fellow actor's.

A source, who is reportedly close to Keanu, has since responded to what was said.

As reported by US Magazine a source said: "Keanu thought the comments came out of left field. It’s kind of backfired on Matthew anyway, which is why he had to apologize."

Matthew released a statement that said: "I'm actually a big fan of Keanu. I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead."

In the excerpt Matthew discussed his and Keanu's mutual friend River Phoenix, who died in 1993 of a drug overdose at only 23.

Matthew wrote: "River was a beautiful man inside and out and too beautiful for this world, it turned out. It always seems to be the really talented guys who go down."

Phoenix famously died of a combined drug overdose from heroin and cocaine outside the Viper Room in West Hollywood.

Matthew said that he 'heard the screaming from my apartment; went back to bed; woke up to the news.'

He added that he broke down in tears after finding out that his friend had died.

In his memoir Matthew talks about his own struggles with drugs and alcohol.

In an interview for ABC News, Diane Sawyer showed Matthew a clip of footage of him looking 'painfully thin' on a Friends episode from 1997, which was the year he first plunged into Vicodin addiction while recovering from a jet ski accident.

He described watching the clip as 'hard'.

He said: "Because in this weird way I feel sorry for that guy, 'cause that's a guy that's out of control. I didn't know what was going on with me. I weighed 155lbs on my way to 128lbs.

"I feel too sorry for that guy, he's going through too much - and it's me, and I remember that, and I didn't understand what was going on.

"I'm so grateful to not be that anymore' but confessed that even now 'it's hard to, it's hard to watch that."
