Keanu Baccus is ready to make the next step in his career and take Celtic or Rangers by storm with a January transfer.
That's the view of his international coach Rene Meulensteen who believes the 24-year-old is in line for a major move away from St Mirren in the foreseeable future. 24-year-old Baccus only joined Saints from Western Sydney in the summer but his performances in Paisley have blown fans away and he earned a place in Australia's squad in Qatar. He was no bit-part player either, with his second-half performance against Denmark earning him a start against Argentina, where he performed admirably up against Lionel Messi.
Meulensteen - who is Graham Arnold's No.2 and previously managed Fulham, Brondby and Maccabi Haifa - reckons Celtic and Rangers could also be eyeing up a move for the 24-year-old. He said: "Perhaps he could also move to one of the bigger clubs in Scotland. He has a lot of great attributes to his game, which is why he got the opportunities he did in Qatar. He made the most of every situation there. I could see him go to France, Spain or the English Championship too and fit in there because he has such boundless energy to go with his technique."
Saints boss Stephen Robinson has already admitted this week he is braced for bids from other clubs and reports in Australia during the World Cup claimed there was interest from clubs in the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, the English Championship and the MLS.
Meulensteen isn't the only person to wax lyrical about Baccus either as former Socceroo Craig Moore told Renfrewshire Live Sport: “Keanu has now been involved in an Aussie team that kept clean sheets at a World Cup, that won two group games and reached the last 16. It’s arguably Australia’s best-ever performance at a World Cup and Keanu played a massive part in that.
“He grew with the tournament. He got minutes against France and Tunisia and then his second half performance against Denmark was unbelievable. He earned that start against Argentina because he showed what he’s all about. He’s got that bite, that tenacity and that desire that you need to make it to the top."
